Everyday American

I was going to spout out what was likely to be some tangential, disorganized rant about the perception of the middle/lower classes among politicians, most notably our presidential candidates.  While I didn’t actually hear Sarah Palin’s “Joe Six-Pack” remark, I think the following article hits the nail on the head, for the most part:  http://www.canow.org/canoworg/2008/10/hey-there-joe-s.html.

We’ll see if I’ve got the stamina for another post today, but I’m going to try and spit something out about the election choices and third parties.  No promises, but to the two people who ever find time to amble by here, stay tuned.

I have spent the last few weeks wandering, in a near desperate search, for those with eyes and ears and stuff. It hasn’t been all that easy, though I confess to having come dangerously close to overdosing on received wisdom and friendly analysis. I am depressed (in a very concrete way) by notions of anti-elitism and anti-intellectualism. Of course they will exist, and of course there will be disparity between those who run a country and those who.. run it from the bottom of the pile. But there is something so very sinister about actively choosing and wanting and demanding some kind of charming retardation when it comes to understanding and competence and giving an actual shit.

All this to say, of course, that I wander by here in the hope of finding new thoughts from you.. and I will no doubt do the same after having my senses realigned/regurgitated/raped tonight.

Pleased to see you around, and if the nomination of Sarah Palin as Vice President has been anything but vomit-inducing, I think I might go with you and say that I, too, am in the pits of depression.

You’re absolutely right about charming retardation. It is valued over qualifications, vision, and general ability to do a job and do it well. Our greatest transgression as Americans was voting George W. Bush into office not once but twice. That alone should have put us all on edge, but as it stands, only about half of us showed any concern in 2004.

We’re reaping it now, though. We deserve whatever is coming, and my gut instinct is that we will soon fall into recession–possibly depression–and watch our status as the lone superpower wither away. So be it, and so shall things pass. The American hegemony has stalled.

Regurgitate all you can, Ams. There’s no need to keep poison in the belly.
