DIAGNOSIS: GEEK, PRESCRIPTION: SOCIAL LIFE

So You've Been Caught Speaking Fluent Geek
BY DR. CHARMING I JUNE 22, 2008

Dr. Charming is not a real doctor and is not liable if his advice does not pay off. Always remember the power lies within you and that these are simply guide lines that may help you achieve goals in your newfound social life.

How many times has it happened? The classic tale of the unexpected listener, the one that takes you by surprise when you least expect it. There you are, deeply engrossed in a bull fight or perhaps a just an interesting conversation about your favorite comic book or sci-fi characters, Who's the stronger? Who would survive? Who would win? Whatever the case may be. But then, all of the sudden, you realize you're being monitored by the gorgeous girl in your immediate proximity and you panic. Well, settle in and listen up because you are about to engage in social conquest.

1. If you're about to Panic, Don't!

When it comes to smelling fear, women are like panthers in a dark jungle. You don't stand a chance. Yes, that was an obvious reference to the Hall and Oats music video for "Man Eater", but it's true. There's nothing that turns women off more than a man who is afraid of his own shadow.

2. Stay cool, and embrace who you are.

There is a fine line between cocky and confident, but the difference is crystal clear to the opposite sex. For example: guy strutting about in pink pop collared polo = cocky, while guy strutting about in vintage style superhero t-shirt = confident. The primary difference however, is not in the clothes but in the attitude. If that attractive girl overhears you, and you quickly try to cover up and change the subject, you are going to appear as though you lack confidence. On the other hand, if you notice she's eavesdropping, and you continue about your business, you'll be showing off that you are cool with who you are regardless of what others think. This is a strong sign of confidence.

3. In the event of approach, repeat steps 1 and 2.

I'm not guaranteeing that just because you're confident, random attractive girls are going to charge straight for you, but still, you'll be giving off a good message about yourself. However, if the girl is some one you know or if the stranger does approach, don't panic. Some girls find the geeky sides of men funny. Never take offense to that. Instead turn it into an opening. In my case I grew up with comics so my fanboy side is frequently showing. When asked about it or caught speaking geek, I joke about myself and allow the girl to get a little background info on me. If she starts talking about herself or the geeky stuff she likes, then I know I've got a chance. If she shows no interest don't waste time. Get back to enjoying yourself.

4. Attempt to seal the deal without showing all of your cards.

When we first started, your geeky conversation was interrupted by an attractive member of the opposite sex or the same sex, whatever floats your boat. You almost freaked out but still managed to stay frosty and if everything has gone the way we hope, you are in the middle of a conversation with a new friend. Feel out the situation before making any drastic moves. Don't ask her to go steady after one hour of talking. First of all, you don't really know this girl and secondly, this is not the 1950's. People have "The Clap" these days. Do ask her about the stuff she's into to see if you have any common ground. If you do have common ground chill a little longer and maybe meet who she's with. If she's meeting up with friends and they like you, you are in. If she's meeting her boyfriend, bow out gracefully. If she's single and you're feeling it, go for it because you have nothing to lose. Ask for her number or ask if she would like to get together sometime, if she spent more than 15 minutes laughing, smiling and paying attention to you, your chances are probably better than zero.

So there you have it. The next time you see a hot girl/guy smiling because they overhear you speaking geek, relax and turn it into an opening. These days you'll find that it is especially easy thanks in part to Marvel and D.C. putting out blockbuster films, because these films give every one a frame of reference to the comic book world. If you have any stories about the above mentioned situation do tell us here at Sloth Jockey.

Stay tuned for more,
Dr. Charming
