Blowing Smoke

Late afternoon in early autumn, he sits in shorts and t-shirt facing her jacketed form. Her shrill protest to his unsophisticated accent draws sympathetic eyes from neighboring tables. Neither notices the embarrassment surrounding them. He casually lights a cigarette, passes it to her, and takes out another.

spiraling smoke blown
from lazy lips into wind
fleeting twilit swirls
